Take a look at ModularIT's talk at the OSWC'08, held in Málaga, Spain. It is an in depth description of the benefits of ModularIT given by Kuko Armas, the ModularIT Release Manager.
On Sunday morning 8th February a lightningtalk about ModularIT will take place at FOSDEM , the Free and Open Software Developers' Meeting. This is the international presentation of the project.
ModularIT 1.1 series is out.
Grupo CPD is proud to announce the release of the new version of ModularIT, the distributed, modular, virtualized, monitored, integrated and centrally managed network services architecture. This recent Free Software community project is the result of ten years of experience in this area applied on behalf of many different customers in several environments. It is also the result of the outstanding work done by the Free Software community, especially by those projects whose technologies are part of this solution.
ModularIT is made up of a variety of virtual network services integrated as a modular structure. It also includes a monitor and management system to control the whole structure. This means that ModularIT not only tries to solve technical problems, but also management, support, maintenance, procedures, control and cost issues for any kind of organization, especially those with several services and servers geographically distributed.
Actually, the ModularIT team is basically formed by Grupo CPD members. This release also reflects our commitment to really involve system administrators, developers and companies in the deployment, development, support, etc. of ModularIT. In addition to that, we would like to open the door for other companies to get involved in a project that reduces costs for them. We have put it in production for several years (this and previous versions) and it has been worth it. It has been really helpful.
ModularIT is mostly based on CentOS, although other OS and Linux distributions are also used or may be included. It also uses XEN along with technologies like Puppet, Nagios, Munin, scripting, etc. The ModularIT 1.1 series has been released with some services. eGroupware, Jabber, Hylafax, Posfix, Samba or Alfresco are only some of the most popular. Some more are coming soon. Key concepts like security, integration, high availability, notifications and alerts, unattended deployments, monitorization, scalability, etc. have been taken in consideration during the ModularIT design, development, deployment and support process.
But above all, ModularIT has been deployed in most of Grupo CPD customer's sites. Current and previous versions have been supported and maintained during the past few years. This means that the ModularIT 1.1 release is not an experimental project. It is a solid solution with a proven background that can improve efficiency and reduce costs for both, customers and suppliers.

On Thursday February 5th, 2009, ModularIT will be presented at Carlos III University, Madrid, Spain, as part of the promotional campaign we are carrying out for public administrations and universities.
Address: C/. Butarque, 15 Leganés (Madrid). Edificio Betancourt, Salón de Grados 1.2.C.16.
I just uploaded a preliminary version of the Fax VM for ModularIT.
It includes hylafax-4.4.4, Avantfax-3.1.5, IAXModem-1.1.1 and the tesseract OCR for Fax processing
This version still needs some testing, but we will probably need to fix only the Puppet files, not the VM image
A ModularIT presentation has been confirmed for one of the conferences from the Free Software programme that Córdoba's college is organizing for the second semester of the scholar year.
I just uploaded a preliminary version of the Alfresco service virtual machine
We just uploaded the new eGroupWare service virtual machine
We have just released a new jabber virtual machine and Puppet config.
This new service is completely integrated in ModularIT
We have installed the GitWeb tool to simplify complete access to ModularIT git repository.
It is very useful for downloading snapshots for offline deployment of service virtual machines
ModularIT GitWeb is available at http://git.modularit.org/
